Windows OpenVPN error: Waiting for TAP

On Windows you may bump into a problem where the network adapter PandaPow wants to use takes a very long time to start. This is indicated by a repeated message in the log:

Log Route: Waiting for TUN/TAP interface to come up...

Often this is a temporary issue, that may simply resolve itself. If not, and after repeated attempts the connection won’t establish, here are some things to try in order to jolt things back into working order again.

Simple steps

The most common fixes are the first 2 of the below list:

Advanced steps

Some more complicated steps.

Reset winsock:

  1. Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories, and do one of the following:
  2. On Windows Vista or Windows 7, right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  3. On Windows XP, click Command Prompt.
  4. Run the following commands:

netsh int ip reset logfile.txt
netsh winsock reset catalog

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Start PandaPow and try connecting again.

Disable firewall

Disable the Windows firewall, or any 3rd party firewall or antivirus software temporarily. Try connecting again and see if it helped.

Adding route delay

To add route delay you need to edit PandaPow’s configuration file. Please do as follows:

  1. Click PandaPow > Settings,
  2. Select the Advanced tab
  3. Click Edit config file
  4. In the config file change the line that says:

route-delay 2

to instead:

route-delay 60 60

Save the file and try connecting again.

Restart the DHCP client service:

  • Go to Start > Run, type services.msc , and Click OK. The service manager appears.
  • In the list of services, find and double-click DHCP Client.
  • Set the Startup type to Automatic.
  • If the Service status is Started, click Stop.
  • Click Start.
  • Click OK, and close the service manager. Restart PandaPow and try connecting again.

Use PPTP or L2TP instead

An option which surely will avoid the problem, although it may have its problems of its own, is to use PPTP or L2TP instead of the PandaPow app. Click here for description how to use PandaPow via PPTP and L2TP
